HOW I BUY

The Ugliest Thing on My Desk Was the One I Used Most

I chose the lamp. I chose the notebook. I did not choose the object I look at for eight hours a day, and it showed.

I spent a genuinely unreasonable amount of time choosing a desk lamp. I read about desk lamps. Then I put a bright plastic bottle covered in old stickers next to it and looked at that instead, for eight hours a day, for about three years.

Everything on this desk was chosen except the one I use most.

Dwell time is the measure nobody uses

We choose objects by how much they cost or how often we are seen with them. Almost nobody chooses by how long they will be in their field of vision, which is the thing that actually affects how a room feels to be in.

By that measure the most important object on a desk is whatever you drink out of. It is there all day, it is at eye level, and it is the only thing you touch every twenty minutes.

By dwell time it is one of the most-looked-at objects you own.

Why the free one stays for years

Because it works. That is the trap. It holds liquid, nothing is wrong with it, and there is never a day when it fails and forces a decision.

So it stays, quietly, being the ugliest thing in a room you otherwise care about, and you stop seeing it in the way you stop seeing anything you have not questioned.

What I replaced it with and why

One rule when I did this: no slogans, no characters, no season. Anything with a joke on it is funny for a month and then it is an old joke you look at all day.

The one exception I allow is if the joke is doing a job, which is a different argument and one I have made elsewhere.

Espresso Gold 40 oz Tumbler

The one I actually swapped to

Deep warm brown with a gold detail, which is doing something specific: brown reads as leather, wood and coffee, three things already on most desks, and the metallic stops it going drab.

No slogan, no character, no season. There is nothing about it to expire, which is the whole point of buying the boring one.

02

The KM 40oz Tumbler

If you want it to be a thing

Same format, same capacity, same routine, but it has a look rather than an absence of one.

I am including it because the no-slogans rule is mine and not a law. If the object having a personality is the reason you will keep it on the desk rather than in a cupboard, that is a better outcome than my taste.

Exclusive Silly Goose FreeSip 32 oz Water Bottle

The exception that proves the rule

This has a joke printed on it and I said no jokes. I keep it anyway, because it is the one I carry rather than the one that sits, and a bottle that leaves the house is doing a different job.

Desk objects and carried objects are not the same category and I think trying to make one thing do both is why most people end up with neither.

The honest caveat

None of this makes you work better. I want to be careful about that, because there is a whole genre of desk content built on implying it does.

It just makes a room you spend most of your life in slightly less irritating to sit in, which is a small and real thing and does not need to be dressed up as productivity.

The lamp is still good. It was never the problem.

Look at what is actually in front of you for eight hours and ask whether you picked it. Mine came free with a gym membership I cancelled in 2019.

What people ask me

Questions I get asked about this kind of thing, answered by me. These are my own answers, not customer reviews.

Is it worth replacing something that still works?
By dwell time it is one of the most-looked-at objects you own, and that is a real reason. It will not make you work better and I am not going to pretend it will. It makes a room you spend most of your life in slightly less irritating.
Will I get bored of it?
That is what the no slogans, no characters, no season rule is for. Anything with a joke on it is funny for a month and then it is an old joke you look at all day.
Can one do both desk and bag?
In my experience trying to make one object do both is why people end up with neither. The carried one and the desk one are different jobs.
